Roman Re-enactors -
Come Meet Your Ancestors

Roman re-enactors are so fascinated by certain periods of Imperial Roman history that they do more than read a lot of books about it. They get together and try it on for size, like the 'Romans' in the images on this site. They also visit schools - in uniform!- and help TV and Film crews. One group even mounted a guard of honor for a bride, leaving her dad's church.

Dressing, working and living under the same conditions our ancestors experienced, even for a short time, teaches things you would never learn from books. It teaches what worked or didn't. More importantly, it teaches why.

Sometimes archaeologists even give them things they have dug up but can't see a use for. (I have often found that amusing. I knew what it was but telling them would have spoiled the fun of discovering the truth for themselves.)

Roman re-enactors organize events to share their interest in us, with more people in an entertaining way. They do a good job of showing your world what our Roman world was like.

If you get the chance to see them, you should go. It's fun, interesting and almost never expensive.. You might even get to try some armor on for size, learn to make quick and easy felt (a must, for lining those cold, hard helmets) or sample an ostrich egg salad.

Some groups are more centred on the Roman army than others, who show a lot of what life was like for Roman civilians. Some show the jobs people did and the tools they used. The ladies demonstrate the more feminine side of life - housekeeping, children and fashion.

Of course it's always the soldiers who draw the crowd - nothing like a smart uniform and sharp military bearing!

Come And Meet Us

There are Roman re-enactors all over the world who enjoy bringing our world back to life for the entertainment and education of their people. Your world seems to have many more places than ours did but many of them share an interest in Imperial Roman history.

Most of these sites have an Events page so you will know where and when to meet them. Some also have links to many more groups and lots of information on all things Roman. All these sites are in the only language understood by my scribe.
