Books About Romans
Collected By My Scribe

These books about Romans have been gathered over many years. Some are now out of print. In Book-talk, that means very expensive to buy - if you find one.

Many old or VERY OLD books can be read on Bill Thayer's website. He has taken the time to type all sorts of books into his site. Now everyone can read books about all things Roman, written by Romans and others, across more than two thousand years!

A word of warning: take your lunch! People can be 'absent' for long periods before dragging themselves out of Bill Thayer's treasure trove.

Libraries are wonderful places. If the goddess Fortuna has blessed you with one, use it! Librarians are very good at finding books you really want to read. They always do their best because failure upsets them.

For an easy and entertaining introduction to the Roman world in general, I can't think of anything better than

The Romans for DUMMIES by Guy de la Bedoyere, from Wiley Publishing.

It's yellow and black and easy to spot. You will find more of his books below. (They also do a good book on training dogs but nothing about scribes or their Masters.)

More books will be added to this list as I find new ones in the shops - or old ones under the bed or behind chests.

All the books on this page are full of interesting facts that will help you know the Romans of Britannia better. General Roman fiction and childrens' stories that might help you learn how the Romans and British felt about things that happened here,

are listed under Roman fiction.
